Learn why trans-fatty acids are the primary fats to eliminate for fertility.
While we’ve discussed the benefits of healthy unsaturated fats, trans-fatty acids (or trans fats) are at the top of the list of things to avoid. These are often man-made fats found in processed foods that can negatively impact your reproductive health.
Why Trans-Fatty Acids are a Concern:
- Promote Inflammation: Trans fats are known to trigger systemic inflammation, which can disrupt the healthy internal environment needed for conception.
- Hormonal Interference: They can interfere with the body's anti-inflammatory pathways and hormone function.
- Blood Sugar Impact: These fats are frequently found in highly processed snacks that cause unhealthy spikes in blood glucose.
Common Sources to Watch For:
- 🍟 Fried Foods: Fast food and deep-fried items.
- 🥯 Packaged Baked Goods: Many commercial donuts, pastries, and pie crusts.
- 🍿 Processed Snacks: Certain brands of microwave popcorn or crackers.
- 🧈 Margarine: Specifically older formulations containing "partially hydrogenated oils".
Pro-Tip: Always check the ingredients label! 🔍 If you see "partially hydrogenated oil," that is a clear sign of trans fats. Swapping these out for olive oil or avocado is a huge win for your fertility.
