What to expect when providing a sperm sample at the clinic.
Checklist: Sperm Sample Collection in Clinic
Semen analysis is a cornerstone of male fertility testing. The test evaluates several parameters of the semen sample, including sperm concentration (count), motility (movement), morphology (shape), semen volume, pH, and the presence of other cells. These factors help clinicians assess male reproductive health and identify potential causes of infertility.
Proper preparation and correct sample collection are essential to ensure accurate and reliable results.
Before the Appointment
1. Abstain from ejaculation for 2–5 days Avoid ejaculation (through intercourse or masturbation) for at least 2 days but no more than 5 days before the test.
Shorter or longer abstinence periods can affect sperm count and motility and may alter test results.
2. Avoid alcohol and smoking Refrain from alcohol consumption for at least 48 hours before the test.
Limit or avoid smoking and recreational drugs, as these can temporarily affect sperm quality.
3. Avoid excessive heat exposure Do not use hot tubs, saunas, steam rooms, or heated seats for several days before the test.
Excessive heat can temporarily reduce sperm motility and viability.
4. Inform the clinic about medications or illness Some medications (e.g., hormones, anabolic steroids, certain antibiotics) may influence semen parameters.
Fever or illness within the last 2–3 months can also affect sperm quality.
