What happens to eggs and sperm inside the fertility lab.
Once eggs are retrieved, they go straight to the lab. Here’s what happens next:
- Assessment: Not every follicle contains an egg, and not every egg is mature enough for fertilization.
Fertilization Methods:
-
Standard IVF: Eggs and sperm are placed together to fertilize naturally. 🧫
-
ICSI: A single sperm is injected directly into each egg (often used for male-factor challenges). 💉
-
Monitoring: Embryologists check for "pronuclei" the next morning to confirm normal fertilization.
-
Development: Embryos grow for 2 to 6 days until they reach the blastocyst stage, which offers the highest chance of success. 📈
Every clinic has its own routine for timing transfers and freezing embryos, so stay in close contact with your team! 🗣️
