An inside look at the laboratory stage of IVF, including fertilization, embryo culture, and embryo selection.
Ever wonder what happens once your eggs leave the procedure room? This video pulls back the curtain on the lab phase. 🧪
- Assessment: Experienced embryologists check each follicle. Remember: not every follicle has an egg, and not every egg is mature or viable. 🧬
- Fertilization Methods: Depending on your plan, fertilization happens via standard IVF (eggs and sperm placed together) or ICSI (a single sperm injected into an egg). 💉
- The "2PN" Check: The morning after retrieval, the lab looks for two "pronuclei"—the sign that fertilization was successful. ☀️
- Embryo Growth: Embryos are monitored as they divide from 2 to 8 cells, and potentially through to the "blastocyst" stage (Day 5 or 6). 🏔️
- Managing the Wait: Your clinic will update you on numbers and quality. While some embryos may be frozen for future use, it’s normal for some to stop developing along the way. ❄️ Trust your clinic's expertise during this critical, highly specialized phase. 🤝
